Wicked Faire: A wicked fun time. Part 1 – What exactly is a Wicked Faire?

With February fast approaching I figure it is time to talk about the Wicked Faire events which is hosted by Jeff Mach. Now when we started going to Wicked Faire several years ago it had a major Renaissance flare, thus the name The Wicked Renaissance Faire. Along with Rennie and Medievalists, that was a surprising number of representative from the BSDM communities, as well as people from the then emerging Steampunk crowd, to costumers of various tastes that were looking for a good time, during a season where there were not many cons going on. Wicked faire has become a lot more then the , as described to myself and my wife, as a indoor Ren Faire. It is a fantastic expo of various communities, life stlyes and interests.

As you can see, in earlier years there was a definite Rennie Vibe.

Wicked Faire has become synonymous as an event where you can take established costumes, stick them on their heads and come up with a whole new approach to them. With the addition to the thematic events it becomes such a fun event seeing what new and creative take people will have on the costumes. In the last several years we have had themes such as A Wicked Alice in Wonderland, and A Wicked Fairy tales. Walking through those doors at the Doubletree Hotel you are instantly made aware that what the muggles of the world call reality has no bearing within the walls. Upon walking into the lobby I watched as two Red Riding Hoods walked past me, One armed with a spear carrying the head of the Bad Wolf in her basket, while the other had a basket full of condoms who was excited at the potential meeting of a Big Bad Wolf.

Wicked Faire is also known for it’s wide variety of costumes ranging from films, steam punk to what ever you can imagine.

As entertainment goes, you will be in for a treat. The acts are as various as the costuming that you see there. One moment you will walk past the grand hall and see sword wielding belly dances, while the next time you will hear the sounds of a folk singer sharing a tale of beauty, victory or loss. Walking into the private section that you must be 18 or older you could sit on a work shop on rope play, or take part in a whipping demonstration. Crossing again the Grand ball room it is not surprising at seeing light saber wielding Candyland themed fights entertaining the crowds with a retelling of Star Wars from a completely different point of view. By this point of the event the audience were not confused by the appearance of Princess Lollipop, Darth Licorice , or the duel candy cane wielding Mr. Mint, by this time such characters are expected. The nights are filled with acts like the White Elephant Burlesque troop, Voltaire, and Shadowcasting of Repo The Genetic Opera.

The White Elephant Burlesque troop is a highly entertaining and engaging performance troup that hark back to the days of speak easys mixed with a modern day geek aesthetic. Make sure you get there early since it is standing room only long before they start their performances. Let them set the tone as you prepare for the amazing musical talents of Voltaire, or the shadow cast performers of Repo.
